What are smart glasses and how can they be used for the assignment?

What are smart glasses?

The technology we want to talk about is augmented reality (AR). In our last post, we told about the idea that we have for Coolblue. The idea is to use AR in the order picking process in the warehouse of Coolblue. A way to implement this is by using smart glasses. smart glasses are glasses that consist of a frame with a special heads up display built-in on the right side that can project an AR image in addition to the normal field of view. The frame is equipped with a built-in 720p photo and video camera. The new version has a 5MP camera for better quality photos. (Google Glasses, Smart glasses 1 and Smart glasses 2)

The glasses operate the AR via an app on the smartphone or directly on the frame with a touchpad. Other opportunities for these glasses are to make photo and video recordings and work hands-free with spoken commands.

A lens is placed on the right side of the frame on which the images are projected. So the user only sees the image on one side. 

Smart glasses are not a completely standalone device, it works together with an Android or iPhone smartphone or a PC. This is done using wireless via Bluetooth, which you can pair just like other devices. This process is made easy by scanning a QR code on the PC. The user can use the special MyGlass app on a smartphone. 

The smart glass is a frame with a small computer built-in and equipped with a prism, there are no normal glasses in the frame. You can slide in sunglasses, in addition. It is also possible to connect headphones directly to the frame so that you can listen to music, or still hear the desired commands in noisy rooms.

How can the smart glasses be used for the assignment?

Smart glasses can be used as a navigator. Because glass is a portable system, you can walk around freely outside. The navigation can be used for walking, cycling, driving a car and also for a forklift truck in a warehouse. The navigation screen is displayed as picture-in-picture in the corner so that the entire field of view is not covered. With speech recognition, you can give commands to the headset without using your hands. The warehouse employee can put on these glasses. The glasses will be linked to the system, so the employee will see arrows in his vision and know which way to go to pick an order.

In short, smart glasses are glasses that project augmented reality into your vision. The smart glasses will be used for our assignment to make the order picking process of the warehouse of Coolblue as efficient as possible.
